Hoy Ping Anniversary 2007 Show

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Wow, can you believe it’s May already! 2007 is really humming along.

Last month our Hoy Ping Anniversary 2007 Show went quite well:

Intro Lion Dance: We debuted two new lions in an “Eye Dotting” (Deem Jing) ceremony. The two sleepy lions blinked and woke up, and entertained the crowd with their sharp steps and dance movements. The big surprise came when two additional lions shocked the audience by coming from the back of the restaurant and joined the two on the stage. The Four lions greeted and played with each other (the two on the stage even tried to play a few tricks). It made for an intriguing show and was very well received.

Forms Showcase: Many of our younger students performed for the very first time Tam Tui# 5 & 6! Other first-time highlights include our junior kids group demo of the full “Cross Battle Fist Form,” and Amen’s debut performance of our first “Three Section Staff” set.

Congratulations: One of our students, Alecia not only participate in our group Lien Bo performance, but also received an HP scholarship for her education at UBC. We are very proud of her achievement.

Surprise: Jason made his solo singing debut…watch out Johnny Seto.

Good job everybody! (for pictures from the evening, please check out our Photo Galleries!)

Calendar updated for May

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

The calendar has been updated for May and for the first time, in a long time, there are no special events booked. It will be a time for us to work on new sets to get ready for the upcoming summer and fall events. Currently, a lot of the class is working on a double gwai set. All of the classes in May will be held at The Warehouse.

Pictures from March 24 Chee Dack Banquet

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

I have uploaded a number of photos (taken by Simo) from Saturday’s banquet and have added illuminating comments for the uninitiated. If you have some pictures from our events and want them added … email them to info@northernshaolin.ca.

At last Sunday and Tuesday classes at the Warehouse, we were joined by several dozen young Danish women who were visiting Vancouver as guests of the Warehouse. Simo will have some photos to share … although I am not sure what is included (probably lots of talking and little training).

Speaking of Johnny … he is threatening to submit his bio to this blog. Be still oh beating heart.

Recent Events

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

We had a good turn-out for the Chinese New Year’s Parade this year. There were many new members who came and participated. We especially want to thank the parents of the younger members who greatly helped this year.

The number of spectators was up this year and was estimated at 60,000 people. There were also more participants marching in the parade than in last year and the parade still finished on schedule. Congratulations to our sifu who was the chief co-ordinator for this year’s parade.

This year, in addition to two lions we included a choreographed routine with Hoy Ping flags. Both our lion dance and flag routine were featured in the Channel M broadcast.

After the parade we took the lions to honour the Chee Dack and Sam Duck societies with lion dances.

At the Kwantlen College performance and at this event, we were pleased to have Vincent Taylor taking snapshots for a photographic display he is assembling. He has done previous collections on other multicultural events in Vancouver. We will soon have a selection of his photographs in our Photos section.

If anyone has interesting photographs of our group in the parade please send them to info@northernshaolin.ca (or email us to make arrangements). We have some new material we are getting ready for the Photos and Videos sections. Unfortunately, our member that was taking photos of us during the parade lost her camera afterwards.

We hope to add the Channel M footage to our site. Other recent media coverage we have received were a picture of our lion dancers (taken at the Hoy Ping site) in the Vancouver Sun , several photos by the Kwantlen student newspaper and a reference in the Lieutenant Governor’s website… stay tuned.

There will be no class this Thursday as we will be doing a lion dance in Metrotown for the Accenture group.

New Year’s Message from Sifu

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Happy New Year everyone!

Thanks for your support and hard work; our martial arts group enjoyed a very successful year in 2006. Last year, we participated in 16 events where we showcased both our lion dance and martial arts skills. Highlights included our first-time martial arts demonstration at the annual Kin Fung celebration, performance for Channel M’s promotional-marketing video production and the lion dance opening ceremony to kick off the CBA 100th anniversary banquet. To maintain momentum, our students must train hard by continuing to polish their current sets and challenge themselves with new (more difficult) routines.

In 2007, we will be re-aligning our Sunday classes to incorporate a more vigorous training program for our novice-intermediate members. We will also be expanding our training curriculum to include a new martial arts class at Lee’s Athletic Association. Our upcoming events are as follows:

January 19Lion Dance and martial arts demonstration at Kwantlen University College 25th Anniversary Block Party

February 18Lion Dance at the annual Vancouver Chinese New Year Parade

April 14 - Lion Dance and martial arts demonstration at Hoy Ping’s annual Spring Festival Celebration

Keep up the good work! We look forward to another great year in 2007.

“In light of the show next month, this Thursday’s class will be at HP in Chinatown. Harry has graciously volunteered to bring pizza for after training. Sifu’s bringing those tasty little oranges, and, of course, you can count on me to bring some leng cha. Cookies and other snackies welcome, as are all students, kids, parents, sweeties, etc”. – LK

Details of the January show will be posted on the calendar soon. – BM
