Happy Chinese New Year January 23rd, 2012: Year of the Dragon!

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

I can’t believe it’s almost literally been another year and Chinese New Year 2012 is coming up soon! To celebrate we have lion dance and martial arts performances all next weekend!

First on Saturday 28th we’re back this year performing lion dance for the Burnaby Height’s Merchant Association! Members are expected to arrive at 4019 E. Hastings around 11:15AM. Dress warmly for all the fun! ( check out this link again for a video montage they took of us last year: http://animoto.com/play/6QO7zpHMxKpgxElYMH3Qfg )

And of course the big event is our annual Chinese New Year Chinatown Parade which takes place next Sunday January 29th, 2012!

Every year the parade gets better and the turn out gets bigger!

Friends and family members are always welcome and are encouraged to participate. We will be bringing out our lions, flags and martial arts teams again and volunteers are appreciated! It is a lot of fun (and you might even be seen on TV!), but come early if you want to beat the crowds!

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

Chinese New Year 2009 is coming very soon and to celebrate Vancouver-style, come on down to the annual Chinese New Year Chinatown Parade!

This year the parade takes place next weekend on Sunday February 1st, 2009!

Every year the parade gets better and the turn out gets bigger! Check out our Videos page for new clips of our performance last year.

Friends and family members are always welcome and are encouraged to participate. We will be bringing out our lions, flags and martial arts teams again and volunteers are appreciated! It is a lot of fun (and you might even be seen on TV!), but come early if you want to beat the crowds!

If this is the first time you are attending the parade, we meet at our Hoy Ping Association location on 440 Main Street Vancouver BC:

Time: Doors will be open at 9:30 am. (Please try to arrive no later than 10:30am)

Place: Hoy Ping Association (click for map)

Uniforms: Wear black pants and perhaps something for the outdoors.
So we wish everyone a prosperous and happy new year, and hopes that everyone will be able to come out and join in the festivities!

Holiday Training break continues!

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

We hope everyone had a wonderful White Christmas and are enjoying the amazing winter weather we are having!

Due to the overwhelming amount of snowball fights and snow fort building and just plain snow, classes have been put on temporary hiatus, so no class for Sunday, December 28th.

Please check our Events calendar daily to ensure that class is being held that day before you come down! And rest assured that our regular class schedule will resume as soon as possible.

While we had wished to celebrate the holidays together with our fellow class members, we know that everyone is diligently continuing their practice and training on their own so that we can start the new year with a bang!

Training break for the holidays

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

The classes for Tuesday and Thursday this week are canceled due to the weather and Santa’s visit.

Rest well and enjoy the holidays. We will be starting our training, on December 27, for the Chinese New Year’s parade (Feb. 1, 2009).

Our sifu will, once again, be the Parade Marshall.

Facebook group

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Check out our facebook group … 31 members and growing … join it if you haven’t already. There is a previously unpublished video of some of our members practicing for last year’s parade. The name of the group is Northern Shaolin Traditional Martial Arts … you’ll recognize the picture. If you have any good photos not used on the website, feel free to upload them to the group.

Better luck next time!

Congratulations to the former self-declared three star blocking champion … Jason.

You put up a good battle and lasted a long time … however, this time the victory went to the more experienced competitor (whom you previously proclaimed victory over).

A message from Linda:

“So now we know the difference between stopping and quitting!

Right, Jason?

heh – neener!”

Welcome to 2008!

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and is looking forward to a new year filled with fun challenges and exciting new opportunities.

Already we have a special Lion Dance performance scheduled for this upcoming Saturday evening, and looking further ahead we have the annual Chinatown New Year Parade, which is a huge event that celebrates the Chinese New Year. Every year the parade gets bigger and bigger, so we’re expecting the largest turn out yet. The Parade will take place on Sunday, February 10th, 2008 and we encourage everyone to come out and help and have fun!

To give those who may be new a taste of what the parade is like we have updated our Videos section with a brand new clip from our performance last year, so do check it out!

Preparing for the fall season

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

I just posted some pictures of Sifu Jun Ing’s recent visit to China. Of particular interest are the photos of some of the 2008 Olympic facilities.

We have two events to prepare for in September. On the 15th is the annual Hoy Ping Mid-Autumn banquet at the Floata. We will be doing an elaborate lion dance followed by about a 10-set kung fu performance. As an added bonus, Hoy Ping is bringing in some semi-professional karaoke singers (rather than the usual suspects who mercilessly assault the volume). On the 16th is the Sam Duck banquet at the Pink Pearl. We will be bringing one Hoy Ping lion and will be eye-dotting two of the new Sam Duck lions. We’ll have a fourth uniform now … for Sam Duck. We’ll also do a 10-set kung fu performance.

Drumming YouTube Video Entry (Bonus: Spring Autumn Da Dao)

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Wow, can you believe it’s August already? We hope everyone has been enjoying the summer.
Looking back, some our students has come quite a ways. Ian, our newest drummer has improved quite rapidly and has now performed successfully at several lion dances and fun events!
Not too long ago, just watch and listen as our very own Ian shows off his then recently acquired drumming skills.

The amazing race has begun! Ian is off to a roaring start and it’s time for everyone else to catch up!

Pretty good after only a few weeks, huh? Step aside, Johnny!

Bonus Feature: “Who is the Johnny Seto?”

Heir to the Seto Clan, Master of the Sunday ‘Bad’ Kungfu Theatre Shaw Claw, Prodigal Son of Hoy Ping, and Drummer Extraordinaire!

Not only is he a Drummer Extraordinaire, but watch as Johnny Seto takes a laid-back subtle approach to Spring Autumn Da Dao form:

July Update

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

After a brief hiatus we are performing/preparing for various events. Here is a quick summary:

1. Since January 2 our sifu has been teaching at the Lee’s Association on Saturdays. So far we have participated in three performances with them: 1. a lion dance and eye-dotting ceremony at their facility in honour of their ancestors; 2. a lion dance and kung fu performance at their banquet (see photos); 3. a lion dance team at the Canada Day celebration.

2. At the Canada Day celebration we also had a lion dance team from the Hoy Ping Athletic Association.

3. Tonight we will be doing a kung fu performance at the Chinatown Night Market. The Hoy Ping facility will be open at 7:00PM for anyone wishing to do extra preparation. All participants should be there by 8:00 and we will go down to the street at 8:30.

4. We have two events (including both lion dancing and kung fu) in September and one in October to prepare for. There will be three banquets for three different societies.

5. Anyone interested in improving their lion dancing should attend on Thursdays and Saturdays this summer.

6. There will soon be a number of pictures from Canada Day and the night market posted.
